Traditions and customs related to fonts
Sources→ One of the traditions that are made in the sources is throwing a coin and make a wish. Where it comes from that tradition? A water-filled container was the Egyptian symbol of motherhood . And for pleasure of gods and demons , gypsies and beggars , money has always had an unerring magic itself . Other cultures have the belief that certain spirits live within some wells or springs , so the water has extraordinary powers ; many of these wells were later dedicated to the saints.
In a hot spring in Bath , England, you are a Latin inscription on a lead tablet , made by an ancient Roman in 200 which was addressed to the goddess Sulis and says: " I curse the one who stole my coat, and whether male or female, free or slave. May the goddess Sulis not let you sleep while the thief
does not return the layer to this temple."
Today is very normal to see people throwing coins to the sources asking some desire.
Springs→ Legends and tales of wells with healing powers are present in many cultures, but perhaps in Celtic most examples of this are. Before the Christianization of the Celtic world can see that one of the sacred elements was water, especially one that flowed from a spring. These traditions did not disappear with the coming of Christianity, but adapted to the new religion and remained in force. Hence in many rural areas of Europe have wells or sources that are attributed magical or healing powers. Pilgrimages to these places are proof of the fame of these legends.Many cultures considered water as the beginning of creation, as in the case of Egyptian mythology or Norse. The water usually has an ambiguous meaning. You can, on the one hand, be a representation of primordial chaos, but on the other, is a symbol of life and healing. The waters of baptism in the Christian religion maintain this double face, they are a symbol of death and healing.
Groundwaters→ The Egyptians believed that the waters of Nun, after the creation , around the earth and that this divinity was responsible for the annual flooding and groundwater that marked the border between the world of the living and the dead ( in other texts is responsible Osiris as god of the underworld ) and that they were staying in a place of " Duat "
Personal opinion
It was a little difficult to work in English, because I'm not used . On the other hand I learned a lot about other cultures and beliefs cuals I ignored. I liked much sought information about mythology in water and other countries and past.
